Για την αποτρίχωση με laser, είναι πολύ διαδεδομένος στην Ελλάδα ο «αλεξανδρίτης», με σύστημα ψύξης, που πέφτει στο δέρμα ακριβώς πριν το laser, ώστε να μην πονάει. Έχει άμεσο αποτέλεσμα, ορατό, στο να καίει την τρίχα μέχρι βαθειά τον θύλακα, αρκεί να είναι σκουρόχρωμη.
Για να κάνουμε αποτρίχωση με αλεξανδρίτη δεν χρειάζεται να έχουμε «μήκος» στην τρίχα, ίσα-ίσα είναι καλύτερα οι τρίχες να έχουν κοπεί μια μέρα πριν. Οι ρίζες όμως πρέπει να είναι μέσα στο δέρμα, γι’ αυτό απαγορεύεται να προηγηθεί κερί ή μηχανήματα που την τραβούν από τη ρίζα. Ο αλεξανδρίτης περνά πάνω από το δέρμα και χωρίς να το ενοχλεί, στοχεύει κατευθείαν στη μελανίνη του θυλάκου της τρίχας. Γι’ αυτό δεν πρέπει να είναι μαυρισμένο το δέρμα (δηλαδή να έχει μελανίνη στην επιφάνεια), και δεν πιάνει καλά τις ξανθές τρίχες και καθόλου τις άσπρες τρίχες. Σε αυτές τις περιπτώσεις κάνουμε την «ηλεκτρική» αποτρίχωση, βελόνα, πάντα, ατομική.
Τα τελευταία χρόνια έχουν κυκλοφορήσει στην αγορά και άλλα lasers αποτρίχωσης, όπως το «διοδικό», που μπορεί να «πιάσει» πιο ανοιχτόχρωμες τρίχες και πιο σκούρους φωτότυπους, με πολύ καλά αποτελέσματα.
